Justice Dies in Darkness” — Ssenyonyi Blasts Court Media Ban

There was commotion at Kawempe Chief Magistrate’s Court after the media was barred from using cameras and mobile phones during proceedings involving 21 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP).

The group includes NUP Deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, Edward Ssebufu, also known as Eddie Mutwe, head of former presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine)’s security detail and Sauda Madaada. They are facing charges of unlawful drilling, conspiracy to commit a felony, and other related offences.

Appearing before Magistrate Damalie Agumaasiimwe, the suspects’ lawyers, led by the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, protested the court’s decision.

“Just like democracy dies in darkness, justice also dies in darkness. We intend to challenge this ruling further because, in our view, there is nothing secretive about this matter,” Ssenyonyi said.

Addressing the court, Mufumbiro expressed frustration over the prolonged detention.

“We have been in jail for seven months. We have requested a trial, but it has not been granted. When we are sick, we are brought here, but when you are indisposed, you are not present. We are being treated unfairly,” he said.

He added that delays and procedural issues were undermining their right to a fair hearing, accusing the court process of lacking clarity and transparency.

According to the prosecution, on February 12, 2025, the suspects, along with others still at large, allegedly participated in a meeting at the NUP offices in Makerere-Kavule. The meeting is said to have involved military-style drills, movements, and formations conducted without authorization, contrary to Section 45(1)(b) of the Penal Code Act.

Prosecutors contend that the gathering at Kavule was not a political meeting, but rather an illegal paramilitary training session.
