The government of Uganda has earmarked $60 million (approximately UGX 225 billion) for the second phase of renovations at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, as part of efforts to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, confirmed the funding, emphasizing government’s determination to elevate the country’s flagship stadium to continental standards.

“I want to confirm that works on the Namboole main stadium are entirely under the UPDF Engineering Brigade. Government has earmarked funds worth $60 million for Phase Two,” Ogwang said in an interview with NBS Sport.

The latest investment adds to the $25 million (about UGX 97.9 billion) already spent on Phase One, bringing the total cost of the stadium’s redevelopment to $85 million.

The commitment follows a recent CAF inspection report which indicated that none of Uganda’s stadiums currently meet the requirements to host Africa’s premier football tournament. Even Hoima City Stadium, a key facility in Uganda’s AFCON plans, did not pass the assessment.

Uganda is co-hosting AFCON 2027 alongside Kenya and Tanzania, but the report has intensified pressure on the three nations—particularly Uganda and Kenya—to fast-track infrastructure improvements.

Phase Two of the Namboole project is expected to focus on critical upgrades, including improvements to seating, the playing surface, roofing, floodlighting, media facilities, and overall fan experience—key areas required to meet CAF standards.

The government’s renewed financial commitment signals urgency in addressing the gaps identified by CAF, with Namboole seen as central to Uganda’s hosting ambitions.
