Police Shoot One Dead During Suspected Assault Arrest in Bugiri
A suspected assault arrest in Bugiri District turned fatal early Friday morning after police reportedly opened fire while responding to an alleged attack by the suspect’s relatives.
According to Busoga East Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Micheal Kasadha, the incident occurred at approximately 4:40 a.m. in Nambale Village, Nambale Parish, Buwunga Sub-county.
Police officers had reportedly moved to apprehend a suspect identified as Nasiru Mugoya over allegations of assault. Shortly after his arrest, a group of his relatives allegedly confronted the officers, armed with pangas, sticks, and stones, in an attempt to force his release.
“In response to the threat posed to their safety, the officers discharged bullets,” ASP Kasadha said.
During the confrontation, one unidentified person was fatally shot. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased as investigations continue.
A team of officers led by the District Police Commander (DPC) of Bugiri has since visited the scene. Police say more details will be provided as inquiries progress.
The incident highlights the risks of violent resistance during police operations, particularly in rural areas where arrests can escalate into confrontations involving relatives or local residents.
