Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director William Ruto has been hospitalised after he and his family were involved in an accident around Taita Taveta on Friday, April 3.
The accident, confirmed by KPA, left his daughter dead.
“We are deeply saddened to announce that our Chief Executive Officer, Capt. William K. Ruto, was involved in a tragic road accident yesterday evening while travelling with his family,” KPA said in a statement on Saturday, April 4.
Adding, “Regrettably, his daughter did not survive the accident. We extend our thoughts and deepest condolences to Capt. Ruto and his family during this time of immense grief.”
Ruto, who has been the head of the KPA since 2023, is said to be in stable condition and under close medical supervision, according to the authority.
“We remain hopeful for their full and swift recovery,” KPA said.
At the same time, KPA revealed that they are working with investigative authorities, among them the police, to establish the circumstances around the accident.
The latest incidents come in the wake of a deadly Friday night on Kenyan roads, with multiple crashes reported as travellers head upcountry for the Easter holidays and schools close for the term.
The death toll from the Nairobi-Nakuru highway crash at Kariandusi near Gilgil has risen to 11 after another victim succumbed to injuries while being rushed to the hospital.
The accident involved a 14-seater matatu that rammed into a stalled trailer in the early hours of Saturday morning.
According to Gilgil Sub-County Police Commander Winston Mwakio, the trailer had developed mechanical problems and stalled on the road before the speeding matatu lost control and crashed into it.
Meanwhile, the Kenya Red Cross Society reported another accident that occurred at around 5:20am at the Tunnel area in Fort Tenan, Kericho County, involving two buses and two lorries carrying a total of 66 passengers.
In that incident, 20 casualties were reported, but no fatalities. Five people sustained serious injuries, with two referred to higher-level facilities, while others, including six children, are receiving treatment at Fort Tenan Sub-County Hospital.
