Pallisa, Uganda: Police in Pallisa District have launched a manhunt for an unidentified driver who knocked down and killed a pedestrian in a hit-and-run accident on Monday night.

The deceased has been identified as Olupot John, 35, a peasant from Kaguya Village in Kamuge Sub-county, Pallisa District.

According to Budaka North Police Public Relations Officer ASP Kyempasa Wilfred, the fatal incident occurred on Monday, April 06, at around 8:00 pm at Kamuge Olinga Trading Centre along the Pallisa–Kumi road.

“The unknown driver, who was heading from Pallisa, knocked the victim who was crossing the road from left to right,” ASP Kyempasa said.

Police revealed that the vehicle dragged the victim’s body for some distance before the driver pushed it aside and fled the scene without stopping.

A team of police officers led by IP Chekwoti Immaculate, the Officer in Charge of Traffic, visited and documented the scene, supported by personnel from traffic, general duties, and crime intelligence.

The body was later conveyed to Pallisa General Hospital mortuary pending postmortem examination.

Police have since launched investigations to identify and trace both the driver and the vehicle involved.

“We appeal to members of the public with any information that could help in tracing the suspect to come forward,” ASP Kyempasa added.
