Katakwi, Uganda: The Katakwi District Health Officer, Dr Simon Ichumar Omeke, has died in a tragic road crash at Ogoloi village along the Soroti–Katakwi road, in an incident that has shocked the Teso sub-region.
The fatal crash occurred on Tuesday night, April 7, 2026, at around 10:00 pm as Dr Ichumar was driving back to his home in Soroti City after a day’s work at Katakwi District Local Government.
According to eyewitness accounts, Dr Ichumar was travelling with two passengers, a woman identified only as Charity, who was seated in the front, and an elderly man believed to be his tractor driver, seated in the rear.
Katakwi LC5 Chairperson Geoffrey Omolo, who visited the scene, confirmed the incident on Wednesday, noting that preliminary findings point to a possible mechanical failure.
“The vehicle appears to have first veered off the road before crashing into a bridge,” Omolo said, adding that the steering system is believed to have failed during the incident.
He further revealed that the steering wheel is suspected to have detached, leading to loss of control and severe damage to the front of the vehicle (registration number UG 6670M).
Both passengers sustained serious injuries, including deep cuts, and were rushed for treatment at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital.
Dr Ichumar was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body has since been taken to Bethesda Hospital mortuary.
Area LC1 chairperson Richard Okello described the crash as unprecedented for the location.
“This is the first fatal accident recorded here in many years, although there was a recent motorcycle accident without fatalities,” he said.
A Loss to the Health Sector
Dr Simon Ichumar Omeke was widely recognised as a committed public health specialist in the Teso sub-region, where he championed maternal health, male involvement in antenatal care, and disease control initiatives.
His death has left a significant gap in Katakwi’s health leadership and service delivery.
Ichumar’s death comes just days after another government official, Peter Banura Araali, the Kikuube District LC5 Chairperson, was killed in a grisly crash after a speeding taxi knocked him dead along the Hoima–Fort Portal road.
