Gunmen in UPDF uniform rob truck, abduct cashier in Kamuli
Kamuli, Uganda: Suspected armed robbers dressed in military uniform on Tuesday evening attacked a commercial truck in Kamuli District, abducting a cashier and fleeing with millions of shillings in a brazen highway robbery.
The incident occurred at Kayundho village in Namwendwa Sub-county along the Namwendwa–Bugaya road, targeting a box body truck belonging to Yaaze General Traders, an Iganga-based auto spare parts dealer.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck driver had briefly stopped to allow a sugarcane truck to pass when a Toyota Wish carrying four suspects rammed into them before launching the attack.
“They came in a Toyota Wish car and jammed into the truck. Immediately after, they beat them and took the manager/cashier with them,” an eyewitness said.
Kamali Reagan, the truck turnman, said the attackers, one of whom was dressed in a Uganda People’s Defence Forces uniform, assaulted the crew before abducting the cashier. “They beat us up and took the cashier with them, taking millions of shillings,” he said.
The victims were reportedly en route to Irundu Town Council in Buyende District to deliver goods when the attack occurred.
By press time, police had not issued an official statement on the incident, leaving residents concerned over rising insecurity along rural transport routes.
Local authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious individuals or vehicles.
According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2025, cases of aggravated robbery and violent theft remain a major concern, with thousands of incidents recorded nationwide.
