ACP, Ibrahim Saiga, the East Kyoga regional police commander says suicide is suspected

SOROTI CITY

Authorities in Soroti City are investigating a potential suicide involving a young man who tragically fell from the third floor of Soroti Main Market on the evening of April 9, 2026.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Saiga, the Regional Police Commander for East Kyoga, has identified the victim as 20-year-old Mark Okiring, who reportedly fell around 7:40 PM.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Okiring fell from the upper level of the busy market under circumstances that remain unclear.

Eyewitnesses promptly intervened and transported him to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Unfortunately, medical staff pronounced him dead upon arrival.

ACP Saiga confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, focusing on whether it was a suicide or if other factors played a role in the fall.

“I urged the public to stay calm and refrain from speculation until further information is available,” RPC said.

The incident has shocked both traders and residents, sparking discussions about the importance of mental health awareness and support systems, particularly for young people.

Authorities are also encouraging anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.

According to global statistics, approximately 700,000 people die by suicide every year, with 77 percent occurring in low- and middle-income countries. In Uganda, the rate is reported at 4.6 deaths per 100,000 individuals—a figure that experts believe only partially reflects the true extent of the issue.
