DOKOLO DISTRICT, Uganda — A 22-year-old peasant farmer has died from injuries sustained during an assault last month, police have confirmed, prompting the arrest of two suspects including a 17-year-old juvenile.

The victim, Awany Ambrose, succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of April 8 at Lwala Hospital in Kalaki District, according to a statement released by the North Kyoga regional police spokesperson, SP PJ Okema.

The assault reportedly took place on March 15 at around 8:00 pm at Doglam Trading Centre. Police have identified the two suspects as Ocen Vincent, 25, a resident of Baryaro Village, and Okello Kizito, 17, from Oryeny Village in the same parish.

The matter came to light when the victim’s brother, Ogwal Isaac, 30, reported the incident to Dokolo Central Police Station on April 8 at 8:13 am — just hours after Awany’s death. According to the complaint, Awany initially did not report the assault to police.

However, on April 7, he disclosed that he had been severely beaten, including being kicked on the head, resulting in visible swelling on his head and cheeks. He was rushed to hospital but died the following morning at around 4:00 am.

Police have since registered the case, examined the body using Police Forms 48A and 48B, and recorded statements from witnesses and caretakers. The body has been released to the family for burial arrangements.

The two suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
