Hundreds of primary school teachers pursuing diploma programmes under Kyambogo University are threatening to demonstrate following a two-year delay in the release of their examination results.

The affected students, enrolled in Diploma in Primary Education (DPE) and Diploma in Early Childhood Development (ECD) programmes, have been studying through the extension programme at St. John Bosco Nyondo Training Institute in Mbale.

According to Ogut Robert, a student who has been mobilising affected colleagues, the problem dates back to 2023 when they sat for their Year One examinations. He explained that despite progressing to Year Two in 2024 and completing their studies, the results have either delayed or been released with serious inconsistencies.

“We have waited for a very long time. Some students have results for both years, but with missing coursework or exam marks. Others cannot even find their names on the results list,” Ogut said.

He revealed that at least 122 students have so far registered complaints, although the number could be higher since some students are yet to verify their results.

Ogut noted that emails sent to the Academic Registrar over two weeks ago have not been answered.

“We are now considering a demonstration so that our voices can be heard. We were supposed to graduate last year, but up to now, we are stuck,” he added.

In 2019, the government issued a policy requiring all primary school teachers to possess a bachelor’s degree by 2029. This sparked a rush among Grade III teachers to upgrade to diplomas as a prerequisite for degree programs.

Nayele Ronald, a teacher at Bujoloto primary school in Mbale city, notes that the delay is actively sabotaging their careers. “We joined to meet the 2029 standards. We have families, children in secondary school, and dependents, all supported by a small primary teacher’s salary. Kyambogo has delayed us completely. We don’t even know if we passed or failed,” Ronald said.

Another student, Namuwenge Racheal, narrated her ordeal, saying her results are incomplete, with marks for one of her papers missing despite having coursework recorded.

“I have been told to retake, yet I have never seen my final exam results. How do I retake something I don’t understand?” she questioned.

Racheal added that the situation is frustrating, especially considering the financial and personal sacrifices made during the course.

Similarly, Walaola Rogers, a primary school teacher from Namisindwa District, said he could not find his name on the results list at all.

“I cleared all requirements and even have receipts, but my name is missing completely for both Year One and Year Two. We don’t know whether we passed or failed,” he said.

He further noted that over 150 students are affected by missing names alone, out of more than 500 enrolled at the study centre.

Students also expressed concern over reports suggesting they may be required to retake examinations without clarity on their previous performance.

According to the students, the principal of the institute, Akol Ross, has made several follow-ups at the university but has reportedly been told that the institution is overwhelmed and working on the issue.

The students are now appealing to the university administration, the Academic Registrar’s office, and the Ministry of Education to urgently address the matter and release complete results.

Efforts by our reporter to obtain a comment from Kyambogo University were unsuccessful. When contacted, the Public Relations Officer, Mr. Reuben Twinomujuni, directed the reporter to the Academic Registrar. However, the Academic Registrar reportedly hung up the phone immediately after the caller identifying himself as a journalist.
