Govt Sets August Deadline for Kyambogo, Makerere Afcon Training Venues

Government has directed that key training facilities at Kyambogo and Makerere Universities be completed by August 2026 as Uganda steps up preparations to meet Caf standards ahead of Afcon 2027.

Government has set August 2026 as the deadline for completion of key training facilities at Kyambogo University and Makerere University, as pressure mounts to align Uganda’s infrastructure with Confederation of African Football (Caf) requirements for Afcon 2027.

The directive comes amid intensified scrutiny of Uganda’s readiness to co-host the continental tournament alongside Kenya and Tanzania, following a recent Caf assessment report which indicated that several facilities in the country do not yet meet requiredstandards.

Presenting an update to Parliament, the State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, said construction works at the two university sites are ongoing and must be completed before the next Caf inspection cycle.

He noted that Kyambogo and Makerere training grounds are among the primary facilities expected to host teams based in Kampala during the tournament.

“These facilities will be delivered within the timelines agreed upon with CAF,” Ogwang said, expressing confidence that contractors are working within schedule to meet the August deadline.

The government has also outlined progress on other Afcon-related infrastructure across the country, including Hoima and Masindi, where construction of new training venues is expected to begin before the end of April following completion of architectural designs for Hoima Boma Grounds and Masindi Municipal Stadium.

Ogwang added that upgrades at Fufa Kadiba Stadium are already underway, with the Federation of Uganda Football Associations expected to hand over the facility by June 2026.

He further revealed that works at Mandela National Stadium will proceed alongside other projects, including expansion of seating capacity and improvements in media, medical, and hospitality infrastructure.

According to the minister, contractors are currently reviewing designs to incorporate Caf recommendations, while structural integrity assessments are ongoing to ensure compliance with international hosting standards.

Government has established an inter-sectoral committee to monitor progress across all Afcon-related infrastructure projects, ensuring coordination between ministries, contractors, and local authorities.

Ogwang said the August deadline is intended to guarantee that Uganda presents fully compliant facilities when Caf officials return for a follow-up inspection later in the year.

“With these timelines, we are confident that Uganda will meet the required standards,” he said.

The update comes at a time of increased parliamentary scrutiny over Uganda’s preparedness, with legislators calling for clearer timelines and stricter accountability mechanisms in the delivery of key infrastructure ahead of Afcon 2027.
