Wananchi storm Dokolo police station, kill suspect
The incident occurred on April 15, 2026, at 6:25 pm at Amwoma sub-county police station.
According to SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police PRO, it is alleged that earlier at around 6:00 pm, two police officers (one male and one female) attached to Abako sub-county police station in Alebtong district arrived at Amwoma sub-county police station on two motorcycles.
They were escorting a handcuffed male suspect, identified as Amenyo Solomon, 25, and were accompanied by two civilians believed to be the complainants in a suspected cattle theft case.
SP Okema added that upon arrival, the Officer in Charge of Amwoma sub-county police station inquired about their mission, noting that no such case had been registered at the station.
While discussions between the officers were ongoing, a mob quickly gathered and surrounded the police station, including the charge office. The situation turned violent as the mob began pelting stones at police officers and demanded that the suspect be handed over to them.
The regional PRO further stated that police officers immediately responded by firing warning shots in an attempt to disperse the crowd, but this did not deter the mob.
In the ensuing chaos, the mob overpowered the officers, forcefully took custody of the suspect, and violently assaulted him using stones, logs, and bricks, leading to his instant death at the scene.
The incident was immediately reported to the District Police Commander of Dokolo and other relevant authorities. At the time of compiling this report, no arrests had been made.
However, two suspects, identified as Alenga and Ocen, have been named and are currently being pursued, alongside other yet-to-be-identified individuals involved in the attack.
Police responded by registering a case of murder by mob. The body of the deceased was recovered from the scene and conveyed to a hospital for postmortem examination.
Statements have been recorded from eyewitnesses to support ongoing investigations, and several exhibits, including logs, broken concrete pieces, and a broken wooden bench, were recovered from the scene, according to Okema.
Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect had earlier been implicated in a cattle theft case reported at Abako sub-county police station by one Opio Moses, 60, and a resident of Adak village, Adagwor parish in Amwoma sub-county.
The suspect had recorded a statement at Abako police station on the same date before being escorted by PC Dynabo and PC Akech Scovia to Amwoma.
SP Okema said the police strongly condemns acts of mob justice and wishes to remind the public that such actions are unlawful and undermine the rule of law.
“Members of the public are urged to always hand over suspects to relevant authorities for proper investigation and legal action.
“Efforts to apprehend all those involved in this incident are ongoing, and anyone found culpable will be brought to book.”
