Kabale Traders Protest Eviction Directive Amid Relocation Uncertainty
Traders in Kabale Municipality are raising concern over an impending eviction from streets and unauthorized trading spaces, saying they have not been given enough time or alternatives to relocate their businesses.
With the enforcement deadline fast approaching, vendors and small-scale business operators, particularly timber traders and carpenters from Mwanjari in Kabale Municipality, say they are facing an uncertain future. They argue that the time allocated is too short to enable them secure new working areas, leaving many stranded.
Ivan Namaara, one of the affected traders, says the directive was introduced abruptly without adequate preparation, making it difficult for traders to adjust. His concerns are echoed by other residents who say the eviction is going to be implemented without clear relocation plans.
Abel Mwebembezi also expressed worry over the lack of communication from authorities regarding where traders should move.
The traders are now appealing to Kabale Municipal authorities to extend the eviction deadline and provide them with sufficient time to reorganize. They are also calling on the government to allocate them a designated trading space.
Byaruhanga Josephant, urged leaders to offer clearer guidance and practical support to ensure a smooth transition.
Concerns have also been raised about the economic impact of the eviction. Turinawe Gerald noted that many traders have outstanding loans tied to their businesses and risk defaulting if they are displaced without alternatives. Namaara added that the move could lead to loss of jobs, as many workers depend on these enterprises for their daily income.
In response, the Deputy Town Clerk of Kabale Municipality, Eric Sunday, said the municipality has already secured land in Bugongi Kakabano where the affected traders will be relocated. He explained that the next step is the construction of appropriate structures to accommodate them.
Municipal authorities maintain that the eviction exercise is intended to improve sanitation, reduce congestion, and restore order within the town. The operation is part of a wider nationwide initiative aimed at ensuring traders operate within designated and regulated areas.
