The police in Mbale city, eastern Uganda, have arrested six students of Nkoma secondary school over the alleged robbery and assault of a senior four student, Siraj Buyinza, from Mbale Progressive secondary school.
Elgon Region police spokesperson, Rogers Taitika, identified the suspects as Abudu Kadiru, John Mwesigwa, James Nabigwa Opolot, Patrick Weboya, Edrine Magomu, and Brian Wadonyi – all students of Nkoma SS.
According to Taitika, the incident occurred on Tuesday at around 5 pm at Nabuyonga Rise, Kichafu Cell, Namakwekwe Ward in Northern City Division. Police allege that the suspects, armed with a knife, attacked and robbed Buyinza.
The group reportedly stole an Infinix smartphone and Shs 20,000 in cash from the victim. Taitika said the incident happened as both the victim and the suspects, who are day scholars, were returning home from school.
A video clip of the incident, recorded by a passerby and later circulated on social media, helped the victim identify the suspects, leading to their arrest. Police say investigations into the matter are ongoing.
