Pupil Killed, Four Injured as School Wall Collapses in Rukungiri
A 12-year-old pupil has died and four others sustained injuries after a school wall collapsed at Rwerere Seventh-day Adventist Church Nursery and Primary School in Rukungiri District.
The deceased has been identified as Ashaba Princess, a pupil at the school. The injured learners include Abasinguza Emmanuel (8), Azahura Treasure (7), Ainembabazi Mercy (10), and Mugarura Onesmus (8).
According to Kigezi Region Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, the incident occurred on April 16, 2026, at around 1:30 p.m. during the lunch break.
Preliminary reports indicate that a strong windstorm caused part of a school building wall to collapse onto pupils who were having lunch on the verandah.
The victims were rescued and rushed to a nearby private clinic, but Ashaba Princess was pronounced dead en route to the hospital.
Police responded to the scene and opened a death inquiry file. The area was documented, and the body was taken to Buyanja Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination. The injured pupils were later referred to Kambuga Hospital for further treatment.
ASP Maate said initial findings point to possible structural weaknesses in the building, urging school authorities to ensure the safety of learners by maintaining strong and secure infrastructure.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
