Territorial police in Kanungu District are making swift progress in investigating a violent confrontation that left charcoal burner Eriabu Aineplani with a severed hand, but his quick reflexes potentially saved his life.

The incident unfolded around 1:00 PM on Saturday at a charcoal burning site in Omukibaare Village, Kayungwe Sub-County. Brian, a casual worker employed by Aineplani, allegedly turned aggressive when confronted about stealing charcoal from his employer. In front of other workers, the suspect reportedly brandished a sharp panga (machete) in an attempt to behead Aineplani. The victim bravely raised his hand to defend himself, resulting in the complete severance of his hand.

Local area chairperson Turinawe Frank promptly registered an attempted murder case at Nyakabungo Police Station. Eyewitness statements were recorded, and the bloodied panga was recovered as key evidence. Aineplani was rushed to Kambuga Hospital, where he is receiving treatment and recovering.

Police efforts to apprehend the suspect are underway, signaling a strong commitment to community safety.

ASP Maate Elly, Public Relations Officer for Kigezi Region, stated: “Our officers are actively pursuing the suspect to ensure he faces justice swiftly. The quick response from witnesses and the recovery of the weapon demonstrate the vigilance of our community and police partnership. The victim is stable, and we urge anyone with information on Brian’s whereabouts to come forward.”

This rapid police action highlights ongoing efforts to curb violence in rural work sites and protect workers’ rights. Updates will follow as the investigation progresses.
