Chelsea left in 'sticky position' as call made on Liam Rosenior's future amid losing run

Liam Rosenior saw Chelsea lose once again, leaving their top-five hopes hanging by a thread

Glenn Hoddle believes Chelsea will stick by Liam Rosenior for now despite him presiding over another defeat - which is another major blow to their Champions League hopes.

The 41-year-old has seen the Blues lose six of their last seven games, with their only win coming over Port Vale in the FA Cup. In the Premier League they've won just once in their league eight outings - which has left them with serious work to do if they want a top five finish.

As a result, heat has been applied to Rosenior, who came in to replace Enzo Maresca back inJanuary. The former Strasbourg boss is already copping in from fans amid talk of another managerial change.

Chelsea's US ownership has axed four managers in four years but Hoddle believes Rosenior will retain their faith for now, but it could be curtains for him if this form continues into next seaason.

He told Premier League Productions: "They’re in a really sticky position. For me, for Liam to stay in that job now until the end of the season, I think they’ll give him that opportunity but he’s got to finish on a high note, he’s got to get some wins under his belt.

"The reason they brought him in is he’s a young manager, he’s part of their project, if you like, if you want to use that word, and I think they’ll give him that chance. But he’s going to have to start winning, even if he doesn’t get in the Champions League, they’re in the FA Cup semi-final so they could actually win a trophy still.

"I think they’ll stay with him and give him a pre-season and I think they’ll start with him but he’s going to have to start next season in a positive way, if not, I think then he could be on a bit of dodgy ground."

Chelsea's fan base have had to accept a new reality after two decades of being serial title challengers under Roman Abramovich. They've dropped off since then, with simply making the Champions League their new remit.

Failing to do so would previously see a manager axed, but Rosenior isn't sure what it would mean for him. "The honest answer is I don’t know," he said. "The honest answer is we’re still fighting and we’ll address that situation at the end of the season, whatever the situation is."
