Police in Kanungu District have launched investigations into a suspected attempted murder after a man lost his hand during a violent confrontation with a casual worker.

The victim has been identified as Eriabu Aineplani, a resident of Omukibaare Village in Kayungwe Sub-county.

According to Kigezi Region Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, preliminary findings indicate that the suspect, only identified as Brian, had been working for the victim as a casual labourer, mainly engaged in charcoal burning.

Police say the victim had reportedly received several complaints linking the suspect to the theft of charcoal from the site.

On Saturday, April 18, 2026, at around 1:00 p.m., Aineplani reportedly went to the work site to question Brian about the alleged theft in the presence of other workers.

During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly turned violent and attacked the victim using a sharp panga. In an attempt to shield himself, Aineplani raised his hand, which was severed in the process.

The incident was reported to Nyakabungo Police Station by the area chairperson, Frank Turinawe. Police officers responded to the scene, documented evidence, and recorded statements from eyewitnesses.

A panga believed to have been used in the attack was recovered and taken in as an exhibit.

The victim was rushed to Kambuga Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect, who remains on the run, as investigations continue.
