Earlier this week, the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) stormed Nakakulwe Village in Butagaya Sub-county, Jinja, in an operation that has sparked a public storm after landing at the home of Kagoma County MP, Moses Walyomu Muwanika, known to his voters most, as Onkokomweru.
What began as a usual crackdown on illegal electricity connections quickly escalated into a heated confrontation after the UEDCL team, working with the Uganda Police Force, reportedly discovered a tampered electricity meter at the legislator’s residence and when checked, it was discovered that the MP was consuming power without paying.
On-the-ground sources said the meter showed clear signs of interference, raising allegations of power theft at the MP’s home.
The situation escalated when the enforcement team attempted to effect arrests. With Walyomu reportedly not at home, officers moved to take his mother, the only adult found at the residence, a move which triggered fury in the village.
Neighbouring esidents quickly poured in, surrounding the home and blocking the team from taking the innocent old woman away.
Witnesses said the crowd accused the operation team of targeting an elderly woman unfairly in the absence of Onkokomweru.
The standoff escalated into a tense face-off between villagers and the enforcement team, forcing them to retreat without making any arrest.
