Two inmates of Malukhu Government Prison have escaped after a swarm of bees invaded the Mbale High Court premises where they had been produced for regular court hearings.

The rare incident happened on Thursday, 23rd April, 2026 at about 5:00PM as court was winding up business when a swarm of bees emerged from the basement cells and rapidly expanded their jurisdiction to courtrooms, offices, and the compound.

The attack happened at 5 pm lasting around an hour, allowing two inmates who had been brought for routine trial hearing at court to escape while two prison warders were injured.

While speaking to our reporter this afternoon in a phone interview, Frank Baine, spokesperson for Uganda Prisons services, confirmed the incident, saying they are now hunting for the inmates.

“Only two inmates escaped out of sixty who were brought to court at that moment,” Mr Baine said.

He said officers who were injured were taken to hospital for treatment and have since been discharged.

Baine termed the attack a “natural calamity,” urging the public to help identify the escaped inmates and report them to the authorities for arrest, as they are considered wrong elements.
