Poison Plot Claims Rock Serere as MP-Elect Esther Acom Heads for Swearing-In Amid Tight Security
Excitement is steadily building across Serere District as residents prepare for the swearing-in and installation of Woman Member of Parliament–elect Esther Lucy Acom, widely known as Ajokotau.
Her victory in the recently concluded elections has energized communities from rural villages to busy trading centers, with many viewing her win as a turning point in local leadership.
However, the anticipation surrounding her inauguration has been overshadowed by troubling allegations about threats to her life. Reports circulating within the district suggest that certain political opponents, still reeling from what has been described as a decisive and humiliating electoral defeat, may be plotting to harm the incoming legislator. While these claims remain under investigation, they have heightened concern among supporters and security agencies alike.
In a phone interview, Acom confirmed that she has received credible information pointing to attempts to compromise her safety. She alleged that individuals believed to be known within political circles tried to bribe one of her employees with a significant sum of money to poison her. According to Acom, the staff member rejected the offer and immediately reported the matter to her, prompting swift action.
“I was informed that there was an attempt to use someone close to me to harm me. The individual approached my employee with promises of millions of shillings, but she refused and alerted me. I have since reported the matter to security agencies,” Acom said.
Authorities have not publicly named any suspects, citing the sensitivity of ongoing investigations. However, sources indicate that security agencies are closely examining the claims, including possible involvement of influential figures.
In response to the perceived threat, the government has reportedly increased Acom’s security detail to ensure her safety as inquiries continue.
Despite the tension, preparations for the swearing-in ceremony remain firmly on track. Organizing teams across Serere District are working around the clock to finalize arrangements for the event, scheduled for May 3.
The atmosphere on the ground is one of celebration, with many residents expressing optimism about what they believe will be a new chapter of responsive and people-centered leadership.
John Richard Emanio, chairperson of the organizing taskforce, confirmed that preparations are in advanced stages. He noted that the event is expected to draw large crowds, reflecting the widespread enthusiasm surrounding Acom’s victory.
“All is set for the swearing-in on May 3. This is not just about installing a new Member of Parliament; it is about marking what many see as the end of leadership that people felt did not serve their interests,” Emanio said.
Political observers argue that Acom’s appeal lies in her strong connection to grassroots communities. Throughout her campaign, she emphasized inclusivity, accountability, and addressing everyday challenges faced by ordinary citizens—an approach that appears to have resonated widely with voters.
As the swearing-in date approaches, Serere District finds itself at a crossroads of hope and uncertainty. While security concerns remain under scrutiny, the prevailing mood among residents is one of anticipation.
For many, Acom’s inauguration represents not just a political transition, but a renewed sense of possibility for the future.
