Finance State Minister Amos Lugoloobi has launched the construction of a Shs500 million market in Kayunga Town aimed at resettling vendors affected by the recent demolition of illegal structures, with officials saying the project will restore livelihoods and improve urban order.

The project is being implemented by Wazimbaz Construction and Designers Company Limited and is expected to be completed within four months.

It is designed to provide a structured and secure trading environment for traders who lost their business spaces during enforcement operations against illegal structures in Kayunga District.

The government says the new market will also contribute to improved sanitation, better organisation of trade activities, and increased local revenue collection once operational.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Amos Lugoloobi said government remains committed to restoring livelihoods for affected communities while promoting planned urban development.

He noted that the market will help ensure traders operate in a safer and more organised environment.

However, it has been clarified that the Shs500 million allocation covers only the first phase of a projected four-storey structure, specifically the construction of the first floor.

Local leaders welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely support for vendors who have struggled since the demolition exercise.

Some traders expressed optimism about improved working conditions, although others raised concerns over transparency in the allocation of stalls once the market is completed.

they also voiced dissatisfaction, arguing that they should have been provided with immediate alternative spaces to sustain their families during the construction period.

Construction is set to begin immediately, with authorities urging affected vendors to remain patient as the project progresses.
