Kyenjojo man arrested for ‘eating’ wife
The police in Kyenjojo district have arrested a 40-year-old man in connection with the suspected murder of his wife, Lukia Karungi, whose remains were recovered from his home.
The suspect, Richard Mwesige, also known curiously as ‘Baby Nsolo’ (baby animala), was arrested on Saturday, May 2, in Kihara Cell, Kyarusozi town council, following a tip-off from residents, according to Vincent Twesige, Rwenzori West regional police spokesperson.
Police say the case emerged after concerns were raised about the disappearance of Karungi, 35, a resident of the same area. Karungi, who had been in a relationship with Mwesige and shares a child with him, had reportedly not been seen for about six weeks.
The matter was reported to Kyarusozi police station by Asaaba Aheebwa, the LC I chairperson of Kihara Cell, who cited both Karungi’s prolonged absence and what he described as suspicious behaviour by the suspect. A subsequent search of Mwesige’s residence led to the recovery of human remains.
“Upon searching the suspect’s house, decomposing human remains were discovered,” Twesige said.
“A human head was found tied in a polythene bag and hanging from the roof, while other body parts, including bones and clothing believed to belong to the deceased, were also recovered.”
The remains have been taken to Kyenjojo General Hospital for DNA analysis and a postmortem examination to establish the identity of the deceased and the cause of death.
Police say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death are ongoing.
