Bullets, Chase & Slaps! URA Deputy Commissioner Gordon Mwesigye in Explosive Shooting Scandal
Mukono Police under the Kampala Metropolitan Policing Area, in conjunction with the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), have launched investigations into an attempted murder case involving a shooting that occurred on April 26, 2026, along the Jinja–Katosi road.
The incident left Tamale Joseph injured with bullet wounds. He is currently receiving treatment at Nsambya Hospital and has not yet recorded a statement.
According to preliminary reports, the incident took place near Nkokonjeru Trading Centre. A URA enforcement team, reportedly commanded by Deputy Commissioner Gordon Mwesigye, was traveling in a Toyota Fortuner (registration number UA20241AA). The team allegedly engaged in a high-speed pursuit of two vehicles: a Toyota Wish (registration number UBR 873G) carrying four occupants, and another Toyota Wish (registration number UBP 571G) with three occupants.
It is alleged that the URA enforcement vehicle abruptly joined the chase at high speed and signaled the other vehicles using flashing lights. During the pursuit, two gunshots were fired, injuring Tamale Joseph. All vehicles later stopped at Igar Petrol Station.
After the vehicles came to a halt, Deputy Commissioner Mwesigye, accompanied by L/CPL Wekesa Brian, reportedly slapped one of the victims in the presence of others. A subsequent search of the victims’ vehicle for suspected smuggled goods yielded no findings. It was later established that the occupants had been returning from a social gathering.
Following the incident, URA enforcement officers transported the injured victim to Nsambya Hospital for treatment.
In a related development, Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed that both the Uganda Police Force and URA are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting of unarmed civilians, as well as the conduct of the officers involved.
Owoyesigyire further stated that a case of attempted murder has been registered at Mukono Police Division under SD Ref 66/26/4/26. The scene of crime has been documented, with photographs taken and a sketch plan drawn. Authorities have pledged to provide further updates as investigations progress.
