Kiira Motors Corporation, Uganda’s flagship automotive manufacturer, has grown from a modest student innovation project at Makerere University into a key pillar of the country’s industrialisation agenda. The project dates back to 2007, when Ugandan engineering students participated in a global Vehicle Design Summit, later producing the Kiira Electric Vehicle (EV) in 2011—Africa’s first electric car. The initiative was subsequently adopted and commercialised by government around 2018, transforming it into a national enterprise aimed at building a domestic vehicle manufacturing industry.

Over the years, Kiira Motors has chalked up major milestones in green mobility, positioning Uganda among Africa’s innovators in electric transport. The company developed the Kiira EVS hybrid and later unveiled the Kayoola Solar Bus, the first of its kind on the continent. It has since rolled out a range of buses, including fully electric models designed for urban transport, as it pushes to modernise public mobility while reducing carbon emissions.

The firm’s ambitions were further cemented with the commissioning of the Kiira Vehicle Plant in Jinja, described by some as Africa’s most advanced bus manufacturing facility. The plant is expected to boost local production, create thousands of jobs, and reduce Uganda’s reliance on imported vehicles, marking a significant step in the country’s drive toward industrial growth and sustainable transport solutions.

According an ordinary resolution from the Extra Ordinary General Meeting of the Company held on February 06, 2026 in Kampala, officials at Kiira Motors Corporation unanimously resolved a number of issues, including those touching on the salaries of movers and shakers in the same company.
