Kampala businessman held over fatal shooting of maid’s boyfriend
Police are holding a 41-year-old businessman in connection with a fatal shooting at his residence in Bunga, Makindye Division, Kampala, that left one man dead and a housemaid injured.
The incident occurred on April 26 at the suspect’s home in Kalungu Zone on Karega Road, according to preliminary police investigations.Investigators said the housemaid, identified as Joan Nelima, had invited her boyfriend, Kevin Atwizukire, to visit her at the residence where she worked. The deceased reportedly arrived at around 9pm and was allowed into the compound before proceeding to the servants’ quarters where Nelima was staying.
Police said the businessman was away from home at the time, but his gatekeeper allegedly called and informed him that an unfamiliar man had entered the maid’s room.
Authorities said the businessman later returned home, entered the compound and went directly to the quarters.
“It is alleged that when the maid opened the door after he knocked, she was shot in the arm,” Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire said on Wednesday.
Police added that Atwizukire attempted to flee but was allegedly shot in the chest and died instantly near the gate.
According to ASP Owoyesigyire, police officers and scene-of-crime personnel visited the scene after the shooting, recorded witness statements and recovered a pistol believed to have been used in the incident, along with two cartridges.
“The suspect is currently detained at Kabalagala Police Station as investigations continue,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
Police said the suspect is being held on preliminary charges of murder and attempted murder, and that the case file has been submitted to the Resident State Attorney for legal guidance.
