BUSIA: NEMA Stops Construction of Mortuary in Wetland
The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has stopped the construction of a Mortuary on a wetland at Buwambo village, Masafu ward, Masafu Town Council in Busia district.
According to a NEMA statement issued today, Thursday, May 7, 2026, the joint operation of NEMA Mbale Regional Office and Wetland officers from the Ministry of Water took place on Wednesday, 6th May, 2026 at around 4:00PM.
The operation targeted the construction of an unlawful structure purportedly a mortuary that was being constructed in the wetland.
“The team arrested 5 suspects on site, impounded building tools, and ordered the immediate halt of the illegal project,” says NEMA adding that Legal charges will follow.
A person who encroaches on a wetland commits an offence and is liable upon conviction to a fine not exceeding thirty thousand currency points or imprisonment not exceeding twelve years or both.
