Man Arrested Over Woman's Death

Police in Rukiga District are holding a 31-year-old man, Bosco Byaruhanga, a resident of Kakamba Village in Kibanda Parish, Kanwezi Sub-county, over the alleged killing of a 64-year-old woman, Vastine Zabanita. The incident is said to have occurred on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at about 12:40 a.m. in Kakamba Village.

It is alleged that Zabanita had stepped outside her house for a short call when Byaruhanga allegedly emerged and began assaulting her. Her sons, identified as Amos and Arinda, reportedly woke up and rushed to intervene, but the suspect is said to have thrown stones at them before dragging the victim back into her house, where the assault allegedly continued.

Neighbours later intervened to rescue the situation, but Zabanita had already sustained serious injuries. The Kakamba Village LC1 chairperson, Enock Tusiime, said the victim was rushed to Kamwezi Health Centre IV, where she later died on Tuesday afternoon.

Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed the incident, saying Byaruhanga is currently detained at Rukiga Police Station as investigations continue. He also noted that the deceased’s body remains at Kamwezi Health Centre IV pending a postmortem examination. Police say inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the killing are ongoing.
