Hellen Lukoma on paying Shs5m for nursery school
Motherhood is no walk in the park, and for singer and actress Hellen Lukoma, the stakes—and the price tags—have never been higher. While most parents are haggling over sweater prices, the House of Lukoma boss is navigating the realities of raising children in an ultra-affluent environment where “nursery school” and “millions” go hand-in-hand.
In a candid recent interview, Lukoma opened up about the financial weight of modern parenting, revealing that her son’s nursery school fees alone currently stand at over Shs 5 million per term. But according to the actress, that is just the tip of the iceberg.
Forget the struggle of getting a child to put on their shoes; Lukoma deals with a much more “executive” type of toddler rebellion. She revealed that transportation has become a major consideration because her son has already developed a very specific taste for German engineering.
“My son doesn’t like my car(Range Rover); he likes his father’s Benz, so it’s the one that takes him to school,” Lukoma shared.
Apparently, even a Range Rover isn’t enough to satisfy the young man when his father’s Mercedes-Benz is parked in the driveway.
The days of school trips to the local zoo or a nearby bakery seem to be long gone for the city’s elite. Lukoma noted that “times have changed,” and these days, school tours have gone international. These jet-setting excursions now cost parents millions of shillings as schools opt for destinations outside the country.
Married to well-off city businessman Anwar Kaka, with whom she shares two children, Lukoma’s insights offer a rare glimpse into the high-octane lifestyle and the “affluent requirements” of Kampala’s celebrity parents. It seems for the Lukoma-Kaka household, the journey of education is paved with luxury rides and international borders.
