KCCA Speaker, Deputy Speaker Races: NUP Fronts Ssebuwuufu, Namazzi
Main opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) has finalized its choices for the top leadership positions at Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), endorsing John Mary Ssebuwuufu and Olive Namazzi as its official candidates for Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively for the 2026–2031 term.
Ssebuwuufu clinched the Speaker flag in a tightly fought internal contest that exposed divisions within the party’s ranks. Voting among 19 NUP Lord Councillors, he edged out Godfrey Luyombya with 11 votes against eight, signaling a narrow but decisive mandate.
The Deputy Speaker race, however, produced a clearer outcome. Namazzi dominated the field with 13 votes, comfortably beating Mosh Ssendi, who managed 3 votes, while Isaac Kabuye and James Mubiru trailed with 2 and 1 votes respectively.
Her landslide victory positions her as a strong contender heading into the broader KCCA contest, with the result seen as a sign of confidence in her leadership and agenda.
In her acceptance remarks, Namazzi outlined a governance focus anchored on restoring order in city trade operations, promoting social justice, and tackling Kampala’s persistent solid waste challenges—issues that continue to define public discourse in the capital.
The internal elections mark a strategic move by the National Unity Platform to consolidate its influence within Kampala Capital City Authority, as the party seeks to translate its growing urban support into institutional control of key city leadership positions.
