Chris Obore Arrested in Anita Among Corruption Crackdown
KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda’s political establishment was thrown into fresh turmoil on Saturday after the dramatic arrest of Parliament’s Director of Communication and Public Affairs, Chris Obore, in what insiders describe as an expanding anti-corruption crackdown targeting powerful figures linked to Speaker Anita Annet Among.
Obore, a longtime communications strategist and one of Among’s fiercest public defenders, was reportedly picked up by security operatives in Mukono on 16th May 2026. Authorities remained tight-lipped about the exact charges, but sources close to the investigations revealed that his arrest is connected to ongoing probes into alleged corruption, illicit enrichment, abuse of public resources, and money laundering involving senior parliamentary officials.
The arrest comes at a politically explosive moment, with pressure mounting around Speaker Among and members of her inner circle. For months, civil society activists and online whistleblower groups under the controversial Uganda Parliament Exhibition campaign have accused top Parliament officials of diverting billions of shillings in taxpayers’ money for personal enrichment and politically motivated activities disguised as corporate social responsibility programs.
Obore had emerged as one of the loudest voices defending Among against the growing accusations. In recent weeks, he repeatedly dismissed reports suggesting that the Speaker was under intense political and legal pressure, insisting instead that hidden political actors were orchestrating a coordinated plot against her.
“All evil plans against AAA are known. The planners are known,” Obore posted on social media earlier this month, claiming that the Speakership race was merely being used as cover for a larger political scheme targeting Among.
In another strongly worded statement, he accused unnamed rivals of spreading fake social media content to blackmail the Speaker and damage her reputation ahead of the anticipated Speakership contest.
Political observers say Obore’s loyalty to Among deepened after her rise from Deputy Speaker to Speaker, a period during which he reportedly distanced himself from former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga amid internal power struggles within Parliament.
Meanwhile, the pressure surrounding Among herself escalated dramatically on the same day as Obore’s arrest. Security teams from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) reportedly raided the Speaker’s residences in Nakasero and Kigo.
Investigators are said to have searched for sensitive financial documents, electronic devices, and records linked to suspected corruption and money laundering activities. Sources familiar with the operation indicated that elite security personnel, including members of the Special Forces Command (SFC), could remain deployed around the properties as investigations continue.
The unfolding developments have intensified speculation about a widening power struggle within Uganda’s ruling establishment ahead of the expected Speakership battle.
President Yoweri Museveni has previously questioned the source of Among’s vast wealth, including reports of high-value properties and a growing business empire. At one point, the President reportedly demanded explanations concerning a luxurious property linked to the Speaker in London.
Among, however, has consistently defended herself, insisting that her wealth comes from legitimate business ventures and years of entrepreneurship.
Now, with arrests underway and investigations deepening, some of Parliament’s most influential figures find themselves at the center of one of Uganda’s most sensitive and politically charged corruption scandals in recent memory.
