Teachers get affordable loans to set up businesses
The government, through the Ministry of Trade and Cooperatives, has intensified efforts to support teachers in entering a value-added cash economy as an alternative source of income aside from teaching. Despite a salary increase, the government, through the Teachers Savings Union Walimu, is mobilising teachers at the district level to access funds and venture into entrepreneurship based on regional produce. According to Robert Bariyo Barigye, the Registrar of Cooperative Societies and Commissioner for Policy and Development at the Ministry of Trade, Walimu has intensified operations that need to be aligned with the ministry’s policies to ensure the effective use of funds allocated by the government.
