Harvey Elliott has now won a trophy in every season from 2021/22 to 2025/26, though his time at Aston Villa has not gone to plan after joining from Liverpool last summer.

The 23-year-old was expected to move to Villa Park permanently but that won't be happening after Unai Emery decided early on that he didn't want to trigger the clause, and Elliott was an unused sub as Aston Villa ran riot against Freiburg in the Europa League final.

So far, Elliott has made just 11 appearances in total this season, and two of those were for Liverpool when he was introduced as a late substitute against Newcastle in the Premier League and featured in the Community Shield.

He needs to pick his next move carefully to ensure that it is the right one after a year of even more frustration.

RB Leipzig was keen last year and might make sense if the Bundesliga resurrects that interest, but it is looking to sign Brajan Gruda from Brighton so may not need Elliott too.

Alongside a few laughing and heart emojis, he jokingly wrote on Instagram after lifting the Europa League: "Was written in the stars from the moment I signed! Up the Villa. Played a huge part. All jokes aside Villa fans thanks so much for everything! Enjoy yourselves."

Arne Slot was asked about Elliott's situation before Liverpool played Aston Villa last week.

"I think for him (Elliott), and for everyone, it didn't work out as we wanted it," Slot said in a press conference.

"Usually you sign a player on loan to use him, but hasn't happened a lot. It's not for me to answer why that it is, but it is never nice for not many minutes. I assume he played more with us last season, and he went there for more time.

"He's such a talented player, he did so well at the U21 Euros. You want a player like that to play more. But he went to a good team with a lot of good players.
