Uganda’s entertainment landscape is rapidly shifting, with new data from the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) showing a sharp decline in Pay TV subscriptions as more Ugandans turn to smartphones, streaming platforms, and social media for entertainment.

According to the latest UCC figures, Pay TV subscriptions dropped significantly from 1.62 million in 2020 to just 1 million in 2024, highlighting changing viewing habits among Ugandans.

The data further reveals that the sector lost nearly 500,000 subscribers in a single year alone, representing a 33.3 percent decline. Although subscriptions slightly recovered to 1.1 million in 2025, the numbers remain far below the levels recorded five years ago.

Industry observers say the trend reflects the growing popularity of digital entertainment platforms, fueled by increased smartphone usage and expanding internet access across the country.

UCC statistics indicate that smartphone penetration in Uganda reached 20 million users by December 2025, marking a major milestone in the country’s digital transformation.

At the same time, internet consumption has continued to rise sharply, with quarterly internet traffic surging to 332.4 million gigabytes, driven largely by video streaming, social media platforms, online content creators, and mobile applications.

The figures suggest that more Ugandans are now consuming entertainment through platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Netflix, and other online streaming services instead of relying on traditional satellite and cable television.

Analysts believe the affordability of smartphones, flexible internet packages, and the rise of local digital content creators are accelerating the shift away from conventional Pay TV services.

The changing trends are expected to push broadcasters and Pay TV operators to rethink their business models and invest more heavily in digital content and online streaming services to remain competitive in Uganda’s evolving media market.
