Rukungiri Municipality Bids Farewell to Long-Serving Mayor Charles Makuru
Rukungiri Municipality today held an emotional farewell ceremony in honor of its long-serving mayor, His Worship Charles Makuru, recognizing his decades of dedicated leadership and contribution to the development of the municipality.
The event brought together various municipal departments, leaders, and stakeholders who paid tribute to Makuru for his outstanding service. Different departments presented gifts to the outgoing mayor as a token of appreciation for his efforts in transforming and developing Rukungiri Municipality.
Speaking during the ceremony, Rukungiri Municipality Town Clerk Isaiah Tumwesigye applauded Makuru for his tremendous contribution to the municipality, describing him as a committed leader whose work has left a lasting impact on the area.
Tumwesigye wished the outgoing mayor good health during his retirement and emphasized that the municipality would continue seeking his guidance and mentorship to help steer Rukungiri Municipality to greater heights.
The function was also attended by Rukungiri High Court Assistant Registrar, Madam Hellen Atigo, who praised Makuru for his tireless efforts in ensuring Rukungiri secured land for the construction of the High Court.
She noted that his determination played a vital role in bringing judicial services closer to residents, improving access to justice within the region.
Atigo further commended Makuru for his hardworking spirit and commitment toward the growth and development of Rukungiri Municipality.
Charles Makuru became Mayor of Rukungiri Municipality in 2010 following the elevation of Rukungiri Town to municipal status. Before then, he had served as Chairperson of Rukungiri Town Council since the mid-1990s, making him one of Uganda’s longest-serving local government leaders.
After decades in public service, Makuru retired from elective politics in 2026, handing over leadership to Boaz Kansiime Matiita.
