Deputy Speakership attracted 16 candidates including Thomas Tayebbwa [favorite] and Gen Henry Tumukunde who is back in parliament after taking a shot at presidency in 2021 which was unsuccessful.

The NRM parliamentary caucus thronged state house today and top of the agenda was voting the candidates for speakership and Deputy Speakership by lining up behind the candidates like it was the case for the CEC and NRM primaries.

However, in a turn of events of all candidates have been persuaded to drop out of the race and instead back the two candidates Jacob Oboth-Oboth for speakership and Thomas Tayebwa for Deputy speakership and are currently fulfilling the ritual of endorsing the candidates in unison as a party ahead of the speakership elections at Kololo.

NRM’s Jacob Oboth-Oboth will now face other candidates from political parties like Norbert Mao of DP who expected endorsement by NRM and Paul Mwiru of NUP for speakership while Thomas Tayebwa will face Asinansi Nyakato of PFF for Deputy Speakership.

The first plenary will be chaired by the Chief Justice who will lead up to the elections alongside the Clerk to Parliament Adolf Mwesigye.
