Police in Tororo have arrested eight suspects linked to the alleged theft of three cattle during celebrations tied to Arsenal’s Premier League title win, sparking debate over conduct during football festivities.

TORORO — Police in Tororo District have arrested eight suspected supporters of Arsenal in connection with the alleged theft of three cattle in Amagoro “A” South Village, Tororo Municipality.

The arrests were reportedly made in the early hours of Sunday morning following investigations into the disappearance of the animals.

Residents suspect the cattle may have been stolen during celebrations linked to Arsenal’s anticipated end to a 22-year Premier League title drought.

According to Police, the suspects are currently in custody at Tororo Central Police Station as investigations continue into the incident, which has sparked widespread discussion across the municipality and on social media platforms.

The Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson, Moses Mugwe, confirmed the arrests, noting that the identities of the suspects have been withheld to protect the integrity of ongoing investigations.

“We have arrested eight individuals in connection with the alleged theft of three cattle in Amagoro A South Village. Investigations are still ongoing, and we believe more suspects could have been involved in the crime,” Mugwe said.

Police sources indicated that security teams acted on intelligence from local residents after reports emerged of suspicious livestock movements during overnight football-related celebrations in the area.

The incident has drawn mixed reactions from residents of Amagoro A South Village, with some condemning the alleged criminal conduct and others describing it as an embarrassment to football fans in the district.

“This is unfortunate. Football should unite people and bring joy, not lead to criminal allegations,” one resident said.

The case has reignited debate over football fanaticism and public conduct during major sporting occasions, particularly in communities where celebrations often attract large crowds.

Arsenal remains one of the most widely supported clubs in Uganda, with supporters across multiple districts frequently organizing public celebrations during major matches and title milestones.

In January 2023, eight supporters of the North London club were arrested for conducting illegal procession when they organised an impromptu parade in Jinja City following their win over rivals Manchester City.

In the same season, at least three fans were reported killed in different football-related clashes.

Police have urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing investigations, adding that efforts to recover the allegedly stolen cattle are still underway.

The suspects are expected to appear in court once investigations are complete and charges are sanctioned by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
