Manchester United have the opportunity to swoop for Robert Lewandowski and bolster a crucial area of their squad this summer. The seasoned striker is departing Barcelona, handing Michael Carrick's side the ideal chance to lure him to Old Trafford. He remains a prolific goalscorer, despite no longer being a guaranteed starter in Barcelona's line-up.

He netted 14 times as the Catalan club clinched the La Liga title, registering a goal every 118 minutes in the league. ESPN have reported that Lewandowski turned down a fresh Barcelona contract on reduced terms after losing his place in Hansi Flick's starting XI. It is understood that the striker has attracted attention from clubs across Europe, as well as interest from Saudi Arabia and the USA, though he is yet to determine his next move. One thing, however, is beyond doubt — he will not be at the Camp Nou next season.

The uncertainty surrounding Lewandowski's future presents United with the chance to land a marquee signing on a free transfer.

Having flourished in both Germany and Spain, the veteran is yet to test his mettle in English football, and a move to Old Trafford could prove an enticing proposition.

A new striker is not at the top of United's transfer wishlist, with midfield remaining the club's primary concern. Nevertheless, a world-class frontman available on a free transfer should never be dismissed out of hand, particularly as United gear up for a return to the Champions League.

Michael Carrick's side have benefitted from the absence of European competition this season, yet the forthcoming campaign will place far greater demands on the squad.

Young striker Benjamin Sesko has caught the eye during the interim boss' tenure but is still earning his manager's confidence and refining his game.

Both Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo are equally capable of leading the attack, but Lewandowski would bring an entirely different dimension to the United dressing room.

He has been an elite centre-forward for well over a decade and could impart his goalscoring wisdom to Sesko and other members of the squad.

It is a formula United have employed on several occasions in recent years. Zlatan Ibrahimovic made an immediate impact, Edinson Cavani became a firm fan favourite, and Cristiano Ronaldo scored 27 goals in 54 appearances before his second stint came to a close.

Lewandowski's goalscoring instincts remain razor-sharp. The striker would relish the chance to prove himself in England, even in a rotational capacity, while United's attack could reap the rewards of his vast experience at the very highest level.

During his four years at Barcelona, Lewandowski claimed La Liga on three occasions. Furthermore, since 2010, he has secured an extraordinary 13 league titles across his spells at Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and the Catalan giants.

Lewandowski's relentless desire to win could prove invaluable to Carrick's squad as United set their sights on pushing forward and challenging for silverware.
