Court of Appeal Commences Two-Day Civil Appeals Session in Jinja

The Court of Appeal has opened a two-day civil appeals session in Jinja, with 27 cases set for hearing as the judiciary continues efforts to reduce case backlog and bring appellate services closer to litigants across the country.

The Court of Appeal on Monday commenced a two-day civil appeals session in Jinja, with a total of 27 cases scheduled for hearing during the sitting, which runs from Monday, May 25, 2026 to Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

The session is being presided over by a panel of three Justices comprising Justice Geoffrey Kiryabwire, Lady Justice Irene Mulyagonja and Justice Dr. Asa Mugenyi.

According to the cause list signed by Deputy Registrar Janeva Natukunda, the matters scheduled for hearing cut across a wide range of civil disputes, including land and property cases, claims for damages, divorce matters, evaluation of evidence, breach of the right to a fair hearing, loan disputes, recovery of money and breach of contract.

The session was officially opened by Justice Kiryabwire.

Present at the opening were judicial officers serving in different capacities, including Justice Lawrence Gidudu, Head of the Jinja High Court Circuit; Lady Justice Joanita Gertrude Bushara, Resident Judge of Jinja; Deputy Registrar Janeva Natukunda; Robert Mukanza, Deputy Registrar of the Jinja High Court; and Grade One Magistrates attached to the Court of Appeal and the Jinja High Court Circuit.

Also in attendance were advocates, representatives from the Uganda Prisons Service, Uganda Police Force, Attorney General’s Chambers and religious leaders.

The session is part of the judiciary’s ongoing efforts to enhance access to justice, reduce case backlog and extend appellate services closer to the people.

Appellants and their legal representatives were present as hearing of the matters got underway.
