We Never Voted Her” — Bukedea Residents Demand Fresh Elections Over Anita Among Seat
Bukedea, Uganda — Residents of Bukedea District in the Teso sub-region have asked President Museveni, in his capacity, to back the demand of Bukedea locals for fresh polls for the District Woman Member of Parliament seat.
Speaking to this publication on Friday, Patrick Okurut from Kabarwa said their rights to participate in electing their women’s representative were denied by courts that ruled in favour of Among.
“We didn’t elect our District Woman Member of Parliament. Anita Among forced herself on the people of Bukedea, but we didn’t vote for her,” he said.
During the elections, two major female candidates who had stood to challenge Among for Bukedea District were disqualified after Among, through her sister, filed a case claiming all the women contesting against Anita were not true residents of Bukedea.
Anita Among, being well connected to the judiciary, won the case and was declared unopposed for the District Woman Member of Parliament seat for Bukedea District.
Caroline Amuge from Bukedea Town Council said they have never seen the importance of Anita Among being their women’s representative, apart from a few people benefiting from her.
“We want a by-election in Bukedea. We should participate in electing our legitimate representative,” she said.
Currently, Among has been put under house arrest following investigations into her alleged illicit enrichment, and all her vehicles have been taken by police.
Meanwhile, plans are also underway to remove her from being the NRM CEC member.
Ever since security raided the home of Anita Among, there have been endless celebrations in Bukedea and parts of Teso, with residents describing it as a great moment regarding a leader they have long known to be too arrogant.
