Man United look set to make Atalanta midfielder Ederson their first signing of the Michael Carrick era but the Brazilian has some thinking to do over what shirt number he will wear

Ederson might not get his dream shirt number at Old Trafford

Manchester United target Ederson might have to have a chat with his future teammates over his shirt number once his move is completed as a transfer edges closer.

The Atalanta and Brazil midfielder is expected to become the Red Devils’ first signing of the summer transfer window. Reports in Italy have claimed that a deal is all-but agreed between the two clubs, with his move set to be confirmed soon.

Once he officially signs for United, he will then have to turn his attention to the shirt number he wants to wear. During his spells with Fortaleza, Salernitana and Atalanta, the 26-year-old has won the number 13 shirt. Unfortunately for him, that digit is already taken by defender Patrick Dorgu so there would have to be a reshuffle for Ederson to don the same digits.

Another of his potential options also appears to be off the table. The midfielder previously wore the number 15 during his time with Corinthians and Cruzeiro but that too has already been claimed by Leny Yoro.

Ederson did, however, begin his playing career with the number 40, which is vacant and could emerge as a potential option.

Speaking last month, Atalanta boss Raffaele Palladino confirmed that the midfielder was on the way out of the club. He said: "Ederson out? It was a decision we agreed with the boy because there’s something going on in the transfer market. The fact that such a player is being followed by such a big club should be a source of pride."

United boss Carrick has already offered his take on the club’s upcoming business and suggested that any player has to ensure they can take the club forwards.

Ederson is set to seal a move to Man United

He said: “I think the beauty of the next transfer window, for everybody, it's always the biggest thing in the world, and the most important transfer window of all time, for every club, I think.

“That's just the nature of how it's been created, to be honest, and I think, again, as a football club, you want to keep moving forward. We certainly do. As a football club, we want to keep moving forward.

“I think it's acknowledged we're at this stage, and the dynamics and the balance of the direction we're at, where we've ended up getting to, and finishing in the league, there's obviously work to do.

“It's quite obvious, with certain players leaving, there's a bit of work to do, but this one is not any more important than the last one, it's what's ahead of us as a football club to try and make the most of it.”
