Nyanzi Rejects Court Witness Role, Calls Case Politically Motivated
Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu has rejected attempts to compel him to testify in an ongoing court case involving the government, describing the matter as politically driven and aimed at weakening the opposition.
Speaking on the issue, Nyanzi said the case was not intended to advance justice but to create internal divisions within opposition ranks.
“I think the matter which was taken to court by government is purely a political matter. It is intended to divide us because when they want to take me as their witness, they intend to divide our team and make our people think that there is some betrayal around,” Nyanzi said.
He maintained that he would not appear in court as a witness, arguing that no law could force him to testify against his will, while also raising concern over what he described as increasing political interference in Uganda’s judicial system.
“My only worry is that the credibility of our courts in Uganda is being compromised by political interests. Our court is not impartial. We see it as a one-sided institution when handling all these issues,” he said.
Nyanzi further alleged that several legal applications filed by his party, including one related to his alleged abduction, have not been addressed. He claimed that the current case is being used to frustrate another petition he has before court by keeping him under pressure and distraction.
The remarks come amid heightened political tensions and ongoing legal disputes involving opposition figures and state institutions.
