PLU Daudi Kabanda criticises Museveni over ‘corruption amnesty’

Rumours are swirling around that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is set to forgive beleaguered former Speaker of the 12th Parliament Annet Anita Among.

Among, currently the Bukedia woman MP and 1st national vice chairperson (female) in CEC of NRM, was stripped of her luxury assets, among them a shs3.5b Rolls Royce and sets of expensive cars over the “unexpected accumulation of wealth.”

Last month, different personnel from the Uganda security agencies invaded Among’s homes in Kampala and Bukedia, on orders of President Museveni, according to his son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Gen Muhoozi, once Among’s ally, parted ways over “corruption and high political ambitions,” a source told tndNews, Uganda, last month.

Since the invasion of her property, the former speaker has not been seen in public spaces – including during the election of her successor speaker, Oboth Oboth. She, however, congratulated Oboth on his victory.

It’s worth noting that Among’s fall has drawn both excitement and concerns over how corruption in Uganda is fought, and if it is genuinely being fought, why do others get harsh penalties.

Posting on his official X handle on Friday, Daudi Kabanda, General Secretary of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) whose chairman is Gen Muhoozi, appeared to have taken a swipe at President Museveni.

He wrote: “If we’re serious about fighting corruption, we can’t stop at exciting the public with House arrests and headlines. People must be prosecuted and convicted so everyone learns the lesson. This habit of forgiving, only for them to fight us again later demoralizes every anti-corruption crusader. You can’t convict Nandutu over 300 iron sheets, then forgive the one who stole the entire economy. The law must apply equally big or small fish.”
