The ferry corridor, which links communities across the Lake Kyoga basin, was commissioned by the Prime Minister in early March 2026 as part of government efforts to improve transport connectivity and ease the movement of people and goods in the region.

However, shortly after commissioning, ferry services encountered challenges when the vessel failed to dock safely at Akamapala Landing Site. Officials from the Ministry of Works and Transport subsequently suspended docking operations after an inspection found the landing area slippery and unsafe due to adverse weather conditions.

The suspension affected transport and business activities along the route, prompting concerns from local leaders and residents who depend on the ferry for access to markets, health services and other essential amenities.

On March 30, 2026, Kaberamaido Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Godfrey Nyakahuma inspected the landing site and supervised the resumption of limited ferry operations. Under the temporary arrangement, the ferry was allowed to dock only once daily as authorities continued monitoring safety conditions.

The reduced level of service later attracted concern from Kaberamaido County Member of Parliament, who raised the matter on the floor of Parliament, citing the negative impact on service delivery and economic activities within the affected communities.

The issue subsequently drew the attention of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, leading to intervention by the State Minister for Works and Transport, Hon. Fred Byamukama, who engaged relevant authorities to restore more regular operations.

Following the intervention, the Ministry of Works and Transport announced a new operational schedule that took effect from Monday to Saturday.

Under the revised timetable, the ferry departs Bukungu for Akamapala at 9:00am, leaves Akamapala for Kagwara at 11:30am, returns from Kagwara to Akamapala at 2:00pm, and makes its final trip from Akamapala back to Bukungu at 3:00pm.

The Ministry has clarified that no ferry services will operate on Sundays.

A Ministry official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly on the matter, said Sundays have been reserved for routine maintenance of the vessel.

“The ferry operates on a tight schedule, and there is no dedicated time for maintenance during weekdays. Sunday has been set aside to ensure machinery is checked regularly to avoid breakdowns and delays,” the official said.

Authorities have urged passengers, transporters and business operators to adhere to the new timetable as government works to enhance reliability, safety and efficiency along the strategic BKK ferry corridor.

The Bukungu–Kaberamaido–Kagwara ferry service is expected to play a vital role in boosting trade, improving access to social services and strengthening regional connectivity for communities living around Lake Kyoga.
