Woman Arrested Over Alleged Killing of Former Husband in Rukungiri
Police in Rukungiri District have launched investigations into the alleged killing of a man by his former wife in Buyanja Sub-county.
The deceased has been identified as Bruce Nuwamanya, a man in his early 30s and a resident of Rwenanura Cell, Nyabiteete Parish, Buyanja Sub-county. The suspect, Patience Akankwatsa, also in her early 30s, was arrested shortly after the incident.
According to preliminary police findings, Nuwamanya and Akankwatsa separated about a month ago. On June 2, 2026, Akankwatsa reportedly sought assistance from local leaders regarding the welfare of their child. The matter was presented to the LC1 chairperson, who facilitated a reconciliation meeting between the two parties. During the meeting, Nuwamanya reportedly agreed to provide support for the child, including paying rent at a separate residence and supplying basic household necessities.
However, on June 3 at around midday, Akankwatsa allegedly returned to Nuwamanya’s residence in Buguma Trading Centre with the child. It is alleged that after handing over the child, Nuwamanya entered his house to pick up a phone and contact local leaders. At that moment, Akankwatsa allegedly attacked him with a knife, inflicting fatal injuries.
Residents responded quickly, apprehending the suspect and notifying police. Officers visited the scene, arrested Akankwatsa, and transported Nuwamanya’s body to Buyanja Health Centre III Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Residents claim the couple’s separation stemmed from allegations of theft against Akankwatsa, a matter that had reportedly been discussed with family members in Nyamayenje Ward, Western Division, Rukungiri Municipality.
The LC1 Chairperson of Rwenanura Cell expressed shock over the incident, noting that the couple had only recently reached an agreement through local mediation efforts.
Meanwhile, Nyabiteete Parish Councillor Charles Karahukayo condemned the killing and called for peaceful conflict resolution. He also urged community leaders to strengthen efforts in addressing domestic disputes and highlighted concerns over substance abuse in local communities.
Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
