Police in the Kigezi Sub-region have launched investigations into a single-vehicle road crash involving a bus belonging to Gateway Bus Company that occurred at Kabaraga along the Mbarara–Kabale Highway.
The accident happened at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Friday when the bus, registration number UBE 977S, was involved in a minor crash during the early hours of the morning.
According to the Kigezi Sub-region Police Spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, traffic officers swiftly responded to the scene and secured the area to ensure the safety of other road users and facilitate investigations.
Preliminary findings suggest that reckless driving may have contributed to the crash. Police have since commenced further inquiries to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
SP Tumushime urged bus operators and drivers to prioritize the safety of passengers by observing road safety regulations and exercising caution while on the road.
He emphasized the importance of adequate rest before undertaking long-distance journeys, noting that driver fatigue remains one of the leading causes of road accidents.
Police also warned drivers against operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any substances that could impair judgment and reaction time.
“We encourage all bus drivers to prioritize the safety of passengers by observing traffic regulations, resting adequately, and avoiding reckless behavior on the road,” SP Tumushime said.
