Police Officer Dies in Tragic Motorcycle Accident in Rubirizi

Police in Rubirizi District have reported a tragic road accident that claimed the life of a police officer attached to the Counter Terrorism Unit under the Rwenzori East Tourism Police. The incident occurred in the early hours of 07 June 2026 at Katunguru Trading Centre along the Ishaka–Kasese Road.

According to the traffic report, the deceased, identified as AIP Byamukama Medard, aged 47, was riding a Uganda Police Force motorcycle, registration number UP 8628 Yamaha YBR, blue in colour. He was reportedly traveling from the Kasese side heading towards Rubirizi when the accident happened at around 0030 hours.

Preliminary findings indicate that as the officer approached a road hump near Katunguru, he allegedly lost control of the motorcycle. The motorcycle then overturned and slid into a drainage trench by the roadside. In the process, he hit his head against the concrete wall of the drainage channel and died instantly.

Residents and nearby witnesses are said to have been alerted by the impact, but despite the quick response, the officer could not be saved. His body was later taken to Rugazi Health Centre IV mortuary, where it is being kept pending a postmortem examination to formally confirm the cause of death.

Police traffic officers, led by IP Twebaze Richard, visited the scene shortly after the incident. They documented the crash site, gathered preliminary evidence, and confirmed the circumstances under which the accident occurred. The damaged motorcycle was recovered and taken to Rubirizi Police Station yard, where it remains pending inspection by the Inspectorate of Vehicles.

Authorities have since opened inquiries into the accident to establish any additional contributing factors, including road conditions and possible mechanical issues. Investigations are still ongoing, though initial reports point to loss of control at the speed hump as the primary cause.

The news of AIP Byamukama Medard’s death has shocked colleagues and the wider police community, especially those in the Tourism Police unit where he served. He is remembered as a dedicated officer who was actively involved in security operations in the Queen Elizabeth National Park area.

Police have expressed condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased, describing the incident as a painful loss in the line of duty. Further updates are expected as investigations continue. May his soul rest in peace.
