Catholic bishop serving in central Mozambique has been shot dead at his residence under mysterious circumstances, according to authorities and church officials.

Bishop Osorio Citora Afonso, 54, was found dead on Saturday after sustaining a gunshot wound to the chest at his home in Quelimane city.

Investigation underway

The country’s criminal investigation service said the cleric is believed to have been killed by a single bullet.

Spokesperson Maximino Amilcar confirmed that detectives have launched a murder investigation to determine the motive behind the attack.

He added that it was still too early to draw conclusions as inquiries remain ongoing.

President mourns bishop

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo expressed deep sorrow over the killing, describing Afonso’s death as an irreparable loss to the nation.

He extended condolences to the bishop’s family, the Catholic Church, and the people of Mozambique.

Service and church background

Born in Mozambique, Afonso previously served in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Italy before returning to his home country.

He was appointed auxiliary bishop of Maputo in 2023 and later transferred to the Diocese of Quelimane by Pope Leo XIV in July 2025.

Church demands justice

The Episcopal Conference of Mozambique said the bishop was found lifeless under mysterious circumstances that must be thoroughly investigated.

The church called for a full probe to uncover those responsible, as the killing has triggered shock and concern across the country.
