Mob Kills Suspected Thief After House Break-in Goes Wrong in Gulu City
39-year-old man was beaten to death by a mob in Olailong, Bardege-Layibi, Gulu City, early Monday morning after he was caught in an attempted house break-in.
Police identified the deceased as Rubangakene Innocent, a resident of Aywee cell, Laroo-Pece Division. He and unidentified accomplices allegedly broke into a home in Zida cell around dawn on June 9, 2026.
According to police, the suspects were trying to remove a window screen when it fell, alerting the occupants. The homeowner and neighbors responded and apprehended Rubangakene while his accomplices fled.
While being taken to identify his colleagues, an irate mob intercepted and assaulted him in Olailong. He died at the scene.
Police, led by SOCO detectives, documented the scene and recovered a knife, pliers, and a screwdriver from the deceased. His body was taken to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem.
Aswa West Police PRO ASP Ongom David Mudong condemned the mob killing: “Much as the deceased was caught in a criminal act, he should have been handed to authorities. We condemn this barbaric act of taking the law into your hands.”
Police say investigations are ongoing and anyone involved in the mob action will be arrested and prosecuted.
