Mbale City spent Thursday and Friday demolishing illegal structures along Gangama Road and other areas in Northern City Division in Mbale City to pave way for Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development Program (USMID) projects.

While speaking to our Reporter today, Saturday, June 13, 2026, the Mbale City Deputy Town Clerk, Hasoho Jolly, revealed that the City has secured funding under the USMID programme for projects such as road construction and installation of streetlights.

The funds are expected next month in the 2026/27 financial year.

She said the two-day operation focused on removing illegal structures along roads earmarked for construction so that works can commence once the money is released.

Hasoho added that all the demolished buildings were located in road reserves and were therefore illegal. She noted that the exercise is ongoing across the city and that more structures along roads slated for construction will be brought down.

Sam Kagosi and Sarah Nadunga, residents of Namakwekwe affected by the demolitions, expressed bitterness towards Mbale City, saying they will seek legal redress. They claim their houses were not in road reserves as the city alleges.
